A mammoth crowd made of teachers, family, friends and sympathizers turned out yesterday at the Yaoundé teaching hospital where the body of Njoni Tchakounte the slain 25 years old Mathematics teacher was being removed from the mortuary. The teacher planned to walk through the city of Yaoundé with the casket of their colleague following a particular itinerary right up to the Teacher’s Training College and to the school where he was stabbed to death in Nkolbisson then back to the family house, but the forces of law and order that was present in their numbers did not accept the option saying that they are not supposed to block the public road.

After lengthy hours of misunderstanding between the crowd and the uniform men, it was in the middle of the EMIA roundabout that forces of law and order decided to disperse the crowd using teargas in the disapproval of the general public. Some of them were arrested and some were reportedly injured. The leader of the teachers’ collective Jaques Bessala was arrested and later released.   The head of States Paul Biya and First Lady Chantal Biya expressed their condolences. Unconfirmed sources say Prime Minister Dion Ngute has invited the teachers’ collective for a meeting this day at 1pm.
